The Hyo Jeong International Foundation for Environmental Peace (HJIFEP) was founded based on the vision of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Rev. Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, who have elucidated a unique viewpoint on human consciousness as it relates to the world of nature.

They envision a world where human beings live as one global family, based on the values of interdependence, mutual prosperity, and universally shared values, relating harmoniously to the natural world as was originally intended by the Creator. Solutions to environmental problems would be shared freely among all levels of society regardless of race, nationality, religion, social status, or culture. People would appreciate and respect nature, and be naturally drawn to find ways to protect and live sustainably with the environment. The key to such a world is understanding our role as human beings with regards to each other, the natural world, and the First Cause of the universe.

In such a world, we can live joyfully with our Creator, with one another, and with all of creation. If we all strive to this end, we believe we will be able to realize a technologically advanced and environmentally healthy world that lives on for the ages.

“You should know how to love nature and love people. Those who cannot love people or love nature cannot truly love God. Because all things of creation are symbols of God, and people are beings of His substance, those who learn to love all things of creation and to love people will come to love God.”

Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, Belvedere International Training Center, New York, February 9, 1974

The following is the environmental pledge presented at the Twenty-Sixth International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences commemorating Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon’s our founders’ centenary birth and the 60th wedding anniversary of Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Rev. Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. The pledge was supported by environmental scholars, experts, and researchers from Korea, Japan, USA, Canada, France, Italy, and Albania.

Environmental Pledge

February 5, 2020 • Seoul, Korea

We, the undersigned, recognize that Earth is afflicted with severe environmental problems that are growing to crisis proportions. Air, water, and soil are being continually polluted; biodiversity is rapidly diminishing; natural resources are being depleted; ecosystems are being degraded; and global warming is at threatening levels. All these issues adversely affect the health and well-being of humans and other living things.

We understand that the Creator has entrusted humans with the responsibility to be loving stewards of the natural world. Yet, ironically, the root cause of the problems can be traced mostly to our own ignorance, greed, and highly self-centered attitude toward and relationship with nature.

Therefore, to restore our original relationship with nature on behalf of the Creator, we pledge

  • to educate our children, youth, and the general public about the value of nature as originally created, our interconnectedness with it, how it sustains human life, and how our choices influence the natural environment;

  • to publicize the seriousness and magnitude of the environmental problems we face today, their causes, and their effects on us and on future generations;

  • to help protect healthy ecosystems and restore those that are degraded;

  • to help prevent the pollution of air, water, and soil, and aid efforts to decontaminate polluted areas;

  • to learn from the principles of cyclical give-and-take relationships that operate in nature, and to help create a circular economy that encompasses how we use natural resources, produce goods, and dispose of waste;

  • to use methods of recycling and composting that minimize waste;

  • to advance the use of renewable energy systems that shrink the level of greenhouse gas emissions and reduce global warming;

  • to promote regenerative agricultural methods that enhance the quality and quantity of food, protect biodiversity in the soil, and draw carbon out of the atmosphere;

  • to support policies that are in accord with environmental sustainability as well as human welfare;

  • to develop an attitude and heart of love toward nature and all people, guided by the ideals of interdependence, mutual prosperity, and universal values, to heal the suffering of humanity and the environment.

In this manner, we will build a world of peace in which we live in harmony
with our Creator, with one another, and with our natural environment.
